Meet Andra
A Lifetime of Service to California’s Students
Andra Hoffman is an educator, advocate, and teacher with over 30 years of classroom and management experience dedicated to students and families across California. From the classroom to the boardroom, she has devoted her career to expanding opportunity, improving access, and ensuring that every student has a pathway to success.
Leadership in Higher Education
Hoffman was elected to the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) Board of Trustees in 2015 and chosen by her colleagues as Board President in 2019. LACCD is one of the largest higher-education systems in the nation, serving more than 250,000 students across nine colleges and 40 cities. This committee oversees the District’s $5.8 billion dollar budget and is responsible for fiscal oversight, accountability and prudent stewardship of public dollars allocated to the nine LACCD campuses, the District headquarters and the voter approved facilities construction bonds totaling over $9 billion. She also served as Past President of the statewide Community College League of California Board of Trustees, where she helped shape education policy for millions of students.
Expanding Pathways for Students
For more nearly three decades, Hoffman has worked at Glendale Community College, where she has directed critical student-support programs including the Career and Transfer Center, Job Placement and Student Employment Services, the Student Literacy Program, AmeriCorps Welfare-to-Work and Early Childhood Education initiatives, and the Teacher Training Program. She has been a leader in expanding Promise Plus, a program that provides free community college education and summer bridge classes for high school students, as well as Dual Enrollment, which allows high school students to earn college credit. She also organized high school counselor days to better connect secondary schools with college pathways.
Champion for Educators and Workforce Readiness
In addition to her administrative work, Hoffman has taught California and American Government as an adjunct professor, inspiring students to understand civic life and pursue leadership. A proud union member of the American Federation of Teachers, she has been a consistent advocate for educators and working families. She has also advanced Career and Technical Education programs in partnership with local middle and high schools to ensure students are prepared for the workforce.
Advocacy and Community Leadership
Hoffman’s leadership has always extended beyond the classroom. She has served on the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, the Affordability, Food, and Housing Access Statewide Task Force, and as a board member for organizations including the YWCA and American Youth Soccer Organization. She is also a longtime champion for women’s equity, having served as President of the National Women’s Political Caucus of the San Fernando Valley and Chair of the LACCD Title IX Task Force, where she worked to strengthen protections against sexual harassment and discrimination.
Rooted in California’s Promise
Her dedication to public service is rooted in her own journey. Hoffman began her higher education at Los Angeles Valley College, later earning her bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies from Antioch University and a master’s degree in Public Administration from California State University, Northridge. Today, she lives in Encino and is the proud mother of two grown children.
A Vision for California’s Future
As California State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Hoffman will bring her lifetime of experience as an educator, advocate, and leader to ensure every student in California—regardless of background, zip code, or immigration status—has access to an excellent, equitable education.
